The Regent

The Regent Cinema opened its doors in 1911 and quickly became a popular spot for lovers of screen and stage. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1983, resulting in the loss of an important part of Fitzroy’s cultural heritage. Located on the former cinema site, these elegant residences with one, two, and three bedrooms have been designed to honour the site’s heritage while also contributing to the future development of Fitzroy.

Architecture

The architectural design of the Regent pays tribute to its rich legacy of cinema, theatre and storytelling, bringing its history into the present day. Our design vision for the Regent focused on restoring what had been lost and making the site a cultural landmark once again.

Interiors

The interiors of The Regent are designed to improve life in both significant and subtle ways. There is a dedicated effort to incorporate local charm and luxurious living, from the street-level experience to the feel of each home. The customisable design of each residence encourages creativity and allows for self-expression, while tactile design elements pay homage to the spirit of the Regent Theatre.

History

Established in 1931, the Regent was a wildly popular venue for film and stage performances until its demolition in 1983. Its grand foyer welcomed moviegoers with a barrel-vaulted ceiling meticulously painted in the Gothic Revival style. The auditorium was lavish, with crystal chandeliers, an ornate proscenium arch, a full-size orchestra pit, and silk house curtains. The Regent’s final show was The Rocky Horror Show, which fittingly marked the beginning of Fitzroy’s transformation into a bohemian stomping ground for artists of all kinds.
